They store small. Most fold nearly flat and hang on a garage hook or slide under a bed. If you live in an apartment, that matters more than any spec sheet.
Worth knowing: the honest downsides
- Strap systems require vigilance. Straps stretch, hooks shift, and everything settles as you drive. A trunk rack should be re-checked after the first few miles of every trip and periodically on long drives. - Frames and paint take contact. Bikes hang by the frame, and bikes contact the rack, each other, and sometimes your car. Two Mistakes to Avoid With Either Rack
Don't skip locks. Bikes on a car rack are visible, accessible, and frequently stolen at trailheads and rest stops. Cable or through-arm locks that secure bikes to the rack — and a lock for the rack to the car — are cheap insurance. Some racks include them; many charge extra.
Don't block your lights and plate. Loaded bikes can obscure brake lights and the license plate, which is illegal in many places. Some jurisdictions require an auxiliary light board or plate relocation — check your local rules, especially with wide-loaded platform racks.
