How to Fix a Flat Bike Tire With an Inner Tube

First confirm that this is the right repair
To fix a flat bike tyre with an inner tube, move completely out of traffic, remove the wheel using the bicycle manufacturer's procedure, take one tyre bead off with tyre levers, replace or patch the tube, remove the cause of the puncture, reinstall the tube without pinching it, seat the bead evenly, inflate within the component limits, and refit and secure the wheel. Check wheel retention and both brakes before riding.
This guide covers a standard clincher tyre containing a removable inner tube. It does not cover a glued tubular tyre, a tubeless repair, a damaged carbon rim, a wheel with broken spokes, or work on an unfamiliar hub-motor cable. If you cannot identify the system or the wheel-retention method, use a bike shop.
Stop somewhere safe before touching the bike
Do not work in a traffic lane, blind bend, narrow shoulder or unstable place. Walk the bike to a protected, level area. If moving it would put you in danger, stay clear and call for assistance.
Stop the repair and arrange transport when:
- the tyre has come off the rim at speed;
- the rim is cracked, sharply dented or visibly distorted;
- spokes are broken or loose enough for the wheel to move sideways;
- the tyre casing is split, cords are exposed, or the bead is damaged;
- the axle, quick release or thru-axle is damaged or unfamiliar;
- brake parts are loose, leaking or contaminated;
- an e-bike wheel has a motor cable you cannot safely disconnect and reconnect;
- you do not have the correct tube, pump or wheel tool.
A tyre that will not stay seated or a wheel that cannot be secured is not rideable. Do not use extra pressure, tape or improvised fasteners to make it reach home.
Check whether the tyre uses a tube
Look at the tyre, rim, valve and the bicycle's records. A conventional clincher with an inner tube is the system covered here. "Tubeless ready" printed on a rim or tyre does not prove that the current setup is tubeless; it may still contain a tube.
Sealant at the valve or bead can indicate tubeless, but absence of visible sealant proves little. A tubular tyre is a different construction attached to a compatible rim. Do not pull at a system you have not identified.
Park Tool's inner-tube repair guide explicitly says its stick-on and vulcanising-patch instructions apply to traditional tyre-and-tube systems, not tubeless tyre bodies. Use the tyre, rim and sealant manufacturer's tubeless procedure or a qualified mechanic for that branch.
Gather a small, compatible kit
For an inner-tube repair, use:
- a spare tube matching the tyre and rim size, with a compatible valve;
- two purpose-made tyre levers;
- a hand or floor pump with the correct valve head and a pressure gauge;
- the exact axle tool if the wheel uses axle nuts or a tool-operated thru-axle;
- a patch kit made for the tube material;
- a clean rag and a way to mark the puncture;
- the bike, wheel, brake and tyre instructions.
The tube's size range and valve must fit the wheel. A Presta valve and a Schrader valve have different diameters and pump interfaces; deep rims may also need a longer valve. Do not select a tube by wheel diameter alone.

Record the wheel before removal
Photograph both sides of the axle, the brake, any washers, torque arm, anti-rotation hardware and cable routing. For a rear wheel, photograph how the chain sits on the cassette or freewheel. This gives you a model-specific reference during reassembly.
Read the bicycle or wheel manual before loosening anything. Common retention systems include:
- a quick-release skewer with a cam lever;
- a thru-axle that threads into the frame or fork;
- a solid axle held by nuts;
- a hub-motor axle with electrical and anti-rotation parts.
They are not tightened the same way. Do not copy a torque value from a different bike.
Protect the brake while the wheel is out
Let disc-brake rotors cool before touching the wheel. Keep oil, chain lubricant and dirty hands away from the rotor and pads. Contamination can reduce braking.
With hydraulic disc brakes, do not squeeze the brake lever after removing the wheel. Shimano's current brake user manual recommends installing a pad spacer and says that operating the lever without one can push the pistons farther out than normal. If that happens, consult the place of purchase rather than forcing the rotor between closed pads.
A rim brake may need its release opened before the inflated tyre can pass between the pads. It must be reconnected and tested after the wheel returns. Follow the brake manufacturer's procedure.
Remove the wheel by its own system
For a rear derailleur bike, shifting to the smallest rear sprocket usually gives a clearer chain path. Support the bicycle in a stable repair stand or place it as its manufacturer permits; do not balance a wheel-less bike where it can fall.
Open or loosen only the identified wheel-retention hardware. Keep springs, washers and anti-rotation pieces in their original order and orientation. Guide the rotor cleanly out of a disc caliper and do not bend it. On the rear, move the derailleur only as required by the correct procedure and guide the chain clear.
Park Tool's wheel-removal guide shows common quick-release, thru-axle and solid-axle systems. It also warns that a wheel not securely mounted in the dropouts can come out while riding. If your hardware does not match the manual or needs force, stop.
Deflate completely and unseat one bead
Remove the valve cap. For a Presta valve, loosen the small tip nut and press the valve to release air. For a Schrader valve, use the valve's central pin. Remove a threaded valve's rim nut if the tube has one, but keep it for reassembly.
Push the tyre bead inward toward the deeper centre channel of the rim all the way around. This creates slack. Starting away from the valve, place a tyre lever under the bead without catching the tube. Add a second lever nearby if needed, then work one bead over the rim.
Do not use a screwdriver, knife or other sharp improvised lever. Park Tool's tyre-and-tube procedure warns that sharp tools can damage the tyre or tube.
Pull the tube out from the side opposite the valve, then lift the valve from the rim. Remove the tyre completely when a full casing and rim-tape inspection is needed.
Find the puncture before fitting the replacement
Pump the failed tube only enough to find the leak. Listen and feel for escaping air, or immerse sections in water and watch for bubbles when water is available. Mark the hole before deflating it again.
Keep the tube aligned with the tyre and rim. The hole's position directs the inspection:
- an outer-facing hole points toward the tread and a possible thorn, glass shard or cut;
- an inner-facing hole points toward rim tape, a spoke hole or a sharp rim feature;
- two nearby cuts can follow an impact that pinched the tube;
- damage beside the valve calls for a close check of valve alignment and the rim hole.
These are leads, not final diagnoses. Inspect the tyre's outside and inside, the bead, sidewalls, rim tape and rim bed. Park Tool stresses finding the cause because a nail, glass fragment or other object can remain embedded and puncture the new tube.
Use bright light first. Do not sweep a bare finger quickly along an unseen tyre interior; a retained shard can cut you. Move a cloth slowly along the casing or wear suitable puncture-resistant protection, then remove visible debris with an appropriate tool. Stop for torn casing, damaged bead, exposed cord, displaced rim tape, protruding spoke or sharp rim damage.
Decide between a new tube and a patch
A compatible new tube is the straightforward roadside choice. Park Tool describes tube replacement as the safest and most reliable procedure and notes that a large hole may not be repairable.
For a small repairable hole, follow the patch kit exactly. A pre-glued patch and a vulcanising patch do not use the same preparation or cure process. Mark the hole, prepare an area larger than the patch, keep it clean, and observe the stated drying or bonding time.
Do not inflate a newly pre-glued patch far outside the tyre merely to test it. Park Tool warns that stretching the tube this way can weaken the patch bond. A patch does not repair a torn tyre casing. A purpose-made tyre boot can be a temporary route home for some casing cuts, but the tyre still requires prompt replacement; it is not a permanent structural repair.
Install the tube without trapping it
Check any directional arrow on the tyre. Seat the first bead if it was removed. Add just enough air for the replacement or repaired tube to take a round shape, then insert the valve straight through the rim and place the tube evenly inside the tyre.
Mount the second bead by hand, beginning opposite the valve and working around both sides. Push already-mounted sections into the rim's centre channel to preserve slack. At the valve, push the valve gently inward so the tyre bead can sit beneath it, then pull it back to a straight position.
Use a tyre lever only as a last resort and keep its tip away from the tube. A lever can pinch a fresh tube against the rim. Schwalbe's tyre-fitting instructions specify that the tube must not be trapped between tyre and rim, the valve should sit at a right angle, the tyre should be centred, and no sharp fitting aid should be used.
Seat the bead before full inflation
Inspect both sides around the full circumference. No tube should be visible beneath the bead. Inflate to low pressure, then check again. Use the moulded line near the bead as a visual reference where the tyre has one; its distance from the rim should remain even.
If the bead rises sharply, dips, or exposes tube, stop and deflate immediately. Reseat it before adding more air. Never try to correct a bulging bead with extra pressure.
Inflate with a gauge to a pressure permitted by every applicable component and the bicycle manual. Schwalbe says the permissible tyre range is printed on the sidewall. The rim or bike may impose a lower maximum, and rider/load guidance may narrow the useful range. When markings conflict or are unreadable, stop and ask the manufacturer or a qualified shop.

Refit the wheel and restore the brake
Guide the wheel fully into its frame or fork seats without forcing the rotor, chain or axle. Reinstall every retained washer and anti-rotation part in its documented position. Secure the quick release, thru-axle or axle nuts exactly as the manufacturer specifies, including any stated torque.
Reconnect a released rim brake. Remove a hydraulic pad spacer only when the rotor is correctly between the pads. Spin the wheel and check that it remains centred and turns without tyre, frame or severe brake interference.
Before riding:
- Confirm the axle is fully seated and the retention device is closed or torqued.
- Squeeze each brake separately until it feels and functions normally.
- Check that the tyre bead remains even on both sides.
- Verify pressure with the gauge.
- Confirm the valve is straight and not being pulled sideways.
- Test at walking speed in a traffic-free area.
Stop if the wheel shifts, the brake lever reaches the bar, the brake was not reconnected, the rotor is heavily rubbing, the tyre wobbles at the bead, or pressure falls again. Do not enter traffic. Use a qualified mechanic.
Diagnose a tyre that goes flat again
Marking the old tube against the tyre and rim makes repeat failures easier to read. A second hole at the same tread position suggests the original sharp object was missed. Repeated inner-facing holes point back toward rim tape or the rim bed. A valve that leans after inflation suggests the tube or tyre has shifted and needs correction before riding.
Check the replacement tube size, tyre and rim compatibility, seating, pressure and the load carried. Do not simply increase pressure after every repeat flat. An incompatible tyre-rim combination, damaged casing or wheel fault needs inspection, not escalation.
The reliable repair has four proofs: the cause was found, the tube is contained, the bead is even, and the wheel and brakes are secure. If one is missing, the job is not finished.
