When to Replace a Bike Helmet: Crashes, Age, and the Signs People Miss

The Short Answer: Crash, Age, or Damage — Whichever Comes First
A bike helmet has three retirement triggers, and only one of them is negotiable:
- After any crash impact — immediately, no exceptions. The EPS foam that protects your head is single-use. It absorbs energy by crushing, and it does not recover.
- After roughly 5 years of regular use, even without a crash. Most manufacturers recommend replacement in the 3–10 year range; 5 years is the honest middle for a helmet that gets ridden, sweated in, and left in the sun.

Why a Crashed Helmet Is Done, Even When It Looks Fine
This is the rule people resist most, so it's worth understanding the mechanism.
Nearly every certified bike helmet — anything meeting the CPSC standard required for helmets sold in the US, or EN 1078 / AS-NZS equivalents elsewhere — manages impact energy with a liner of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. In a crash, that foam crushes. The crushing is the protection: it extends the time over which your head decelerates, which is what reduces the force reaching your brain.
Here's the problem: crushed EPS stays crushed. It doesn't spring back, and the compressed zone may sit deep in the liner where you can't see it. The thin outer shell is designed to slide on pavement and spread load — it can pop back into shape and look nearly untouched while the foam underneath has already spent its one impact.
So the standard across the industry, and the position of every major manufacturer, is blunt: if your helmet took a hit in a crash, replace it before you ride again. Not "inspect it and decide." Replace it.

If you crashed and you're genuinely certain the helmet never contacted anything — no pavement, no handlebar, no curb — the foam likely wasn't loaded. The honest complication is that crash memories are unreliable, and adrenaline is a poor witness. If there's a scuff, a dent, a compressed spot, or any doubt at all, treat it as an impact. How Long Does an Uncrashed Helmet Last?
Shorter answer than you'd like: manufacturers generally recommend 3–10 years, and about 5 years is a sensible replacement point for a helmet in regular use.
Helmets don't have a hard expiry date stamped on them the way milk does, but the materials do age:
- EPS foam can become more brittle over years of temperature swings, and its performance depends on the liner staying intact and properly bonded.

There's a legitimate debate here. Some independent testing has suggested that carefully stored, undamaged EPS holds up longer than the shortest manufacturer intervals imply. That may be true for a helmet kept in a closet. But manufacturer guidance accounts for real-world use — the sun exposure, the sweat, the dozens of small knocks — and the fit-system wear that lab foam tests don't capture. Find your helmet's actual age
Look inside the helmet for a manufacture date sticker — most certified helmets have one, usually under a pad or printed on the CPSC label. Date your helmet from when it was made or bought, not from when you "started really using it." If you can't find a date and can't remember buying it, that itself is a strong hint.

1. The foam liner
Press gently around the EPS, and look closely at vents and edges — cracks love to start there.

- Dents or compressed patches (compare the two sides of the helmet against each other)
- Foam separating from the outer shell
2. The shell
- Deep gouges or cracks (superficial scratches are cosmetic; anything that flexes or catches a fingernail deserves suspicion)
- Delamination — the shell lifting or bubbling away from the foam
- Chalky, faded plastic, which signals long UV exposure
3. Straps, buckle, and fit system
- Fraying or fuzzed webbing, especially where straps meet anchors
- A buckle that doesn't click positively or has cracked teeth
- A retention dial or cradle that slips, creaks, or won't hold its setting
4. The fit itself
A helmet you've owned for years may not fit the way it did on day one — pads compress and cradles loosen. The standard is unchanged: level on your head, snug enough that the skin of your forehead moves when the helmet does, buckled, with about two fingers of space between eyebrow and brim.
